Two cases of polyneuropathy , microcytic anemia and copper defi ciency aft er prolonged allopurinol treatment

چکیده
Copper is a cofactor for numerous coenzymes and metalloproteins essential for normal neurologic function. Th e most common neurological presentations of copper defi ciency are myelopathy, polyneuropathy and optic neuropathy. Here we present two cases of sensorimotor polyneuropathy, copper defi ciency and microcytic anemia in conjunction with allopurinol management for gout. Th ese two patients presented with a clinical description similar to that of chronic idiopathic axonal polyneuropathy. It would be advisable to determine the levels of trace elements in patients with polyneuropathy of unknown cause. We believe that further studies are necessary in order to gain better understanding of the role of copper serum levels in the development of sensorimotor polyneuropathy.

iamine is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a pivotal role in carbohydrate metabolism. In acute defi ciency, pyruvate accumulates and is metabolized to lactate, and chronic defi ciency may cause polyneuropathy and Wernicke encephalopathy. Classic symptoms include mental status change, ophthalmoplegia, and ataxia but are present in only a few patients [1]. Critically ill patients are prone to t...

Aneurysms of the splanchnic arteries are common. However those of the veins are practically rare. Th ey can be congenital (due to persistent vitelline vein) or acquired (due to pancreatitis or cirrhosis) [1]. Complications can be thrombosis or rupture. Management would include watchful expectancy or aneurysmorrhaphy or aneurysmal resection. In case of thrombosis thrombectomy or thrombolysis or ...

The case described by Dr. Sarper and her colleagues in their letter to the editor, entitled “Severe iron defi ciency anemia due to late presentation of congenital diaphragmatic hernia in a toddler”, was not a late but rather a delayed diagnosis case since iron defi ciency anemia was diagnosed in this patient at least a year earlier with intermittent vomiting [1]. The diagnosis of a diaphragmati...
متن کاملPossible Mechanisms for The Effects of Calcium Defi-ciency on Male Infertility
Calcium (Ca) is a significant element that acts as an intracellular second messenger. It is necessary for many physiological processes in spermatozoa including spermatogenesis, sperm motility, capacitation, acrosome reaction and fertilization. Although influences of Calcium deficiency on sperm function and male infertility have been widely studied, mechanisms for these abnormalities are not wel...
